The Bollywood Maestro: Ashutosh gowarikar !!!

Ashutosh gowarikar

An actor who took up directing after almost a decade, Ashutosh Gowariker is one of those rare people who take the path less taken and, although it was a rough going, he is now one of India's elite directors. He began his film career modeling in commercials by Govind Nihalani and Jenny Pinto. He entered Hindi cinema with Ketan Mehta'sHoli (1984), as Ranjeet

Prakash, one of the main protagonists. The same film which marked Aamir Khan’s child artist spree. His acting career continued with Mahesh Bhatt's Naam (1986), David Rathod's West Is West (1987), Saeed Akhtar Mirza's Salim Langde Pe Mat Ro (1989), Jalal Agha's Goonj (1989), Anant Balani's Gawahi (1989), and Kundan Shah's Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa (1993). He also acted in award-winning Marathi-language films such as the Ujwal Thengdi creation Vazir (1994) and Shraboni Deodhar_'s Sarkarnama (1998). Alongside these features, TV serials like Amol Palekar's "Kachchi Dhoop" (1987), the Saeed Akhtar Mirza & Aziz Mirza-Kundan Shah collaboration "Circus" (1989), and Pradeep Uppoor and B.P. Singh's "C.I.D." (1999) also found him in front of the camera--and, incidentally, brought him into contact with the finest minds in contemporary Indian cinema.

Journey as Bollywood Maestro!!!

All the exposure gave Gowariker a desire to helm the camera . He has made five films. His first film was Pehla Nasha with Aamir khan which sank without a trace. Baazi (1995), enjoyed average success. It told the story of the nexus between politicians, gunrunners and terrorists and a righteous cop (Aamir Khan) who is hell-bent on breaking this ring.

Lagaan

He shot to fame with film Lagaan This was not only the top money grosser but also bagged all the awards and was also nominated as best foreign film at the academy awards. The film veered away from most norms used in the making of a commercial Hindi film-it was a period drama set in rural India; its language was a dialect; a British cast was included; it is a musical and, above all, it was a film about sports. The film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign-language Film and earned worldwide raves for its direction. In the meantime, Gowariker directed a series of five commercials for Coca-Cola. These too became hits and won accolades at every advertising function in India.

Swades

He basked in the glory of his third film, Swades (2004), which, although not as great a hit as Lagaan (2001), is being praised by critics.

His last released film is Jodha-Akbar (2006), which made waves all over. Though a little too long, the movie had bagged all the awards and applauded everywhere.

What’s Your Rashee?

Ashutosh is busy with his next romantic comedy film these days titled What’s Your Rashee? starring Priyanka Chopra and Harman Baweja in the lead.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's new film Heera Mandi!!!

Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Bhansali has begun work on his next directorial film after Saawariya, which is titled Heera Mandi. For the venture Bhansali is grooming two male actors and one female actress from Pakistan for the movie. They will come down to India from Pakistan to learn a thing or two about acting, before they face the camera.

Bhansali was supposed to have started work on his untitled film starring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. It was believed that with the death of Begum Para, Heera Mandi had run into casting problems and so Bhansali started work on the film that would have featured the Jodhaa Akbar pair. However, he has now immersed himself in training his new cast for Heera Mandi.

The two actors came in earlier for the workshop. The actress, who is also in Mumbai, is being kept under wraps, but one thing that has to be mentioned, is that she is beautiful. Her beauty is ethereal and Bhansali is training her in all the nuances required to get a standing ovation.

With this news being hush hush and much secrecy surrounding the actor's whereabouts, there's not much information available as yet. Also, producer Madhu Mantena is a happy man these days. Reason? He has teamed up with Sanjay Leela Bhansali too for his next, Chenab Gandhi. The film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Hurman Baweja and Vidya Balan. Chenab Gandhi is set in the 1930s and is made on a budget of Rs 35 crore. The film also marks the debut of Vibhu Puri as a director.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali

A masterpiece, a real perfectionist of Indian cinema was born on 24th February,Mumbai,India. Sanjay Leela Bhansali is definitely a multi-faceted personality. Add to this, his competency as a scriptwriter (he wrote both 'Khamoshi' and 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam' , and his sensitive handling, as a debutante director, of a difficult emotional subject in 'Khamoshi', Sanjay has emerged as one of the prominent members of the new school of film making which will carry the torch for the film industry in the new millennium. The pointers were always there. His diploma film at the film institute (FTII), 'Angikam', received rave reviews and just as it was presumed that a bright filmmaker was arriving. After joining Vidhu Vinod Chopra as his chief assistant, he was given the onerous responsibility, and the credit, as the director of songs in '1942: A Love Story' by Vinod. Music also played a vital part in his directorial debut, 'Khamoshi', but the driving force of the script was definitely the emotional depth in the relationship between the deaf-and-dumb parents and their only child. Sanjay is and has always been a passionate director who directly connect with each and every individual.

Career

Bhansali began his career as an assistant to Vidhu Vinod Chopra and was involved in the making of Parinda, 1942 A Love Story, and Kareeb. He made his directorial debut outside the Chopra camp with Khamoshi: The Musical, the commercially unsuccessful, where he has shown a daughter's struggle to communicate with her deaf mute parents. His next film was a triangular love story, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, which created auras of celebration and festivity. The film was a great success and won numerous awards. His next film Devdas was Bhansali's ode to the well known novel of the same name. Again it was a tribute to his father who lived a part of his life drunk. It also won major Bollywood awards and was India’s official entry to the Oscars. The musical got a significant reception at Cannes, where it premiered. After this success came Black, which Time Magazine (Europe) selected as fifth of the 10 Best Movies of the Year 2005 from across the globe. Black broke a record at the 2006 Filmfare Awards, winning eleven awards. After having four successes, Saawariya was the first major flop in Bhansali's career which was met with sharp criticisms and simultaneously poor collections at the box office. In his film Hum Dil De chuke Sanam salman khan has seen talking to his father looking at the sky,it is a real story of Bhansali's life.

His current project is entitled "Chenab" Gandhi directed by Vibhu Puri and written by Bhavani Iyer, who also wrote for Black. A departure from romance, this songless film revolves around three characters played by Amitabh Bachchan, Harman Baweja and Vidya Balan and centers around Indian freedom fighter, Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, also known as Frontier Gandhi. [7]

His next venture is titled "Guzarish", which he will direct starring Hrithik Roshan & Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. His every flim is dedicated to his father.

Personal Quotes-

At the primere of Black(2005) he said that for people it(Black) may be just darkness but for him(Sanjay)it was a universal truth. Frustration and anger of a child has been shown who is deaf and mute and wants to see the world that is pictured so beautiful.Anger is an important part of their expression.
If we come to Devdas(2002),Bhansali said that he has paid tribute to all the directors who have made a film like this. He also added that he has made a film as Raj Kapoor would have made,on the top.

Awards

Sanjay Leela Bhansali at Award Function

Sanjay Leela Bhansali has awarded several National awards, filmware awards, Zee cine awards, IIFA award, Bollywood movie award, Stardust award, etc

We can say that the bollywood industry will always want a director for whom his work is his soul and a director like him will always bring the Indian cinema on the top. As a director, writer, producer Sanjay leela Bhansali will be working with great excellence with a brilliant mind frame.

Top Ten Bollywood Directors In 2008

Bollywood has shaped and expressed the changing scenarios of modern India. The trends of bollywood have changed a lot. Now the movies are made lavishly, costumes are more extravegant, movies are more glamorous, and locations are very beautiful , far beyond one can dream of like from the glaciers of switzerland to the pyramids of Egypt. Bollywood has made a great entry into the millenium with the greatest ever movies.

Behind evry great movie, there is a director who put evrything in the making of the fim. The year 2008 was a different year as this year has made directors to try different things, like novel approaches , different story line and gave us some great films to see. There were hard hitting dramas, great comedies, and lot many more. It took a time to decide on it. here are some the top ten best directors in 2008

10 Rajat Kapoor - Mithya :

Rajat Kapoor has incorporated the character in such a way that the movie seems to be a modern day Romeo and Juliet. Rajat kapoor continues to bring movie one after the other. It starts of with a comedy, and ends up with a black film. Ranvir Shorey gets a chance to make the best use of his acting skills.

9 Neeraj Pandey- Wednesday:

Perhaps the biggest surprise package of the year. Debutant Neeraj Pandey directs veterans Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher in an edge of the seat movie about terrorism and justice that the terrorists deserve. Most films trying to cash in on a sentiment deeply affecting the public end up falling flat on their face. Quite contrarily, this one is sufficiently engaging.

8 Anees Bazmee- Singh is king:

which is the highest grossing film of 2008. He certainly knows what he is doing, and he does it with great comedy and style, and audiences cannot get enough of his films!

7 Tarun Mansukhani- Dostana:

Debutant Director Tarun Mansukhani, his debut film was backed by Karan Johar and had three of the biggest stars as the l leads. He took a comedy for his debut film. he made completely entertaining fim with a great timing and sensitively guiding the story. Amazing performances were given by Abhishek Bachchan, John Abraham and Priyanka Chopra. The film was an instant hit and has ended up on our Best Films of 2008.

6 Nishant Kumar- Mumbai Meri Jaan:

Debutant Nishant Kumar tackled such a delicate in a very matured manner. Nishant Kumar comes in the category of those director who take a difficult task of creating a film such as Mumbai Meri Jaan. The direction and script of the movie makes the people stick to their seats. Niashant managed to grasp the emotions of his characters on the screen and portrays a good tale to public.

5 Abbas Tyrewala - Jane tu ya jane na

Jane Tu Ya jane Na hit the theatres after 3 years of long gap, but it certainly was worth the wait. With a cast of debut actors and a fresh and wonderfully creative take on what could be considered a standard Bolly film, Tyrewala made it into something new and fantastic. As not only the writer but also director, he gave us a film that was full of fun, comedy, emotions, friendship and most of all love, but included a deeper look into what looked, on paper, like a typical college love story.

4 Abhishek Kapoor- Rock On:

The most innovative film was brought up to the scrren by Abhishek Kapoor. He has shown the uniqueness not only in the story of the film which he wrote but also in the fim he shot, which made the film so interesting to watch. Possibly the biggest and most important triumph in Rock On!! that makes it a rocking experience all around!"

3 A R Muragadoss- Ghajini

He is surely one of the most talented filmmakers. A R Muragadoss created a new style of filmmaking in Tamil cinema with Ghajini, he gave the original actor Surya a new career path and now he's given Bollywood one of its biggest blockbusters. There was action, adventure, emotion, drama, romance, and none of this was packaged as your average masala flick but instead the formula was sealed with perfection and maturity in every corner of the execution, and sealed with performances of high calibre. From acting to editing, each fine point was honed and executed by this master.

2. Ashutosh Gowariker- Jhodhaa Akbar

Jodhaa Akbar has been linked to the amazing epic films of old Hollywood made by Cecil B De'Mille. There has truly never been a film like this in recent memory. It is grand, rich, beautiful, and gargantuan. Pulling off a film like this is incredibly difficult, but Ashutosh has done a remarkable work and makes it look so easy. With the costumes, the scenery, and with every little detail he painted a glorious palette that was stunning to see. You get lost in the simple love story, and it is a mark of a great director to do that. He put his heart and soul in this project, and came up with a film that can be called a magnum opus.

1. Madhur Bhandarkar- Fashion

One of the best film in 2008, Madhur Bhandarkar's films always have realism at their core, and in this film that core was the fashion industry. In Fashion he followed Priyanka Chopra's character from a simple girl with big dreams to a showstopper who has a big fall but rises once again, and made it one of the best performances of her career. He brought out something in Priyanka, a deeper and more complex performance that was brilliant. In fact, the entire cast was superb. He has an eye and a style that is all his own, and it makes for great cinema. His work on this film was outstanding and will always be considered one of his best.

Indian Film

The Indian Film industry is largest in the world. It is the largest in all respect be it in terms of ticket sales or the number of Indian movies produced anually. India accounts for 73% of movie admissions in the Asia-Pacific region, and earnings are currently estimated at US$8.9 billion.

Indian movies are not only popular in India but in various parts of the world, especially in countries with significant Indian communities. India has many regional film centres: Bollywood, the largest, in Mumbai, producing films in the Hindi language; Kolkata, for films in Bengali; Chennai, for films in Tamil: Hyderabad, for films in Telugu etc. Most Indian film directors are known for their work with one regional industry.

There are directors of regional cinema and the parellel cinema. Parallel Cinema is otherwise known as "Art films" cinema, which means the realistic indian film with real life situations. In the 1960s and 1970s, the Indian government financed a number of such films, on Indian themes. The best-known Indian "neo-realist" is Satyajit Ray.
